Lake Tanganyika cichlids — species, locations & maps

Tribe / Genus:	Lamprologini / Chalinochromis
Type locality:	La Chute, 1 km south of Rutunga and Magara, North Lake Tanganyika, Burundi (8–9 m)
Biotope:	Rocky to intermediate habitats at moderate depths, typically 5–15 m
Geographic distribution:	Nearly lake-wide distribution in Lake Tanganyika, except the central Congolese coast south of Kavala.
Typical adult size:	Up to 13 cm TL in the wild; up to 16 cm TL in aquarium conditions
Sexual dimorphism:	Males are consistently larger than females
Recommended aquarium size:	150 L for a bonded pair; significantly larger tanks (500 L or more) for groups
Aquarium setup:	Rock-dominated layout with numerous caves, crevices, and passageways. Best kept as a single bonded pair unless housed in very large aquaria.
Diet:	Invertebrates and sponges picked from aufwuchs; also consumes small invertebrates and some algae. In aquarium, accepts a wide range of frozen and prepared foods.
Breeding:	Cave spawner forming stable pairs. Large broods (often over 150 fry) are guarded by both parents. Fry leave the cave at about 1 cm and form free-swimming groups before parental care ends.
Aggression:	Highly aggressive towards conspecifics; territorial aggression increases strongly during breeding.
Special notes:	On tanganyika.si the Tanzanian form Chalinochromis sp. 'ndobhoi' is treated as a distinct species.
