Neolamprologus schreyeni 'Magara'
Tribe / Genus: Lamprologini / Neolamprologus
Type locality: La Chute, 35 km south of Usumbura, Lake Tanganyika.
Biotope: Deep rocky to intermediate habitat, occurring at depths between 20 and 40 m.
Geographic distribution: Known only from northern Burundi, from south of Bujumbura to the Magara area.
Typical adult size: Type series specimens are less than 4.5 cm total length; a maximum size of up to about 8 cm total length has been reported.
Special notes: A dark member of the Neolamprologus leleupi species group, similar in general shape and coloration to N. niger, but smaller and more slender, with lower dorsal- and anal-fin spine counts. Shorter fins show small light dots, as also seen in N. niger.
The species has a very restricted range and has never been exported for the aquarium trade, likely due to its deep habitat and subdued coloration.
Minor meristic differences, especially in dorsal and anal fin counts, are considered sufficient to support its status as a distinct species despite its resemblance to N. niger.
