The species is considered a substrate spawner; because the types were collected with Neothauma snails, it has been suggested that it could occasionally use shells.
It is separated from that group by multiple characters, including fewer anal spines (6 instead of 7–9), elongated pelvic fins (rather than rounded), and a higher vertebral count (31 versus 29), with a higher ratio of abdominal vertebrae (13/17 versus 11/18).
Its closest relative has been proposed to be Neolamprologus ventralis from the same coast but farther south; the two differ in scale counts in the longitudinal series (30–31 versus 34–36), gill raker counts (6–7 versus 4–5), and caudal fin shape (rounded versus notched).
The species has not been imported and has not been maintained in aquaria; care has been presumed to resemble that of Neolamprologus ventralis.
